March 16 was a memorable day for rookie Cory Melton of Keithville, Louisiana, who took home $24,383.40 in earnings at the Professional Bull Riders Phoenix Bud Light Cup at the America West Arena. The event was the 12th stop on the PBR’s 2002 Bud Light Cup Series presented by Las Vegas.

Melton’s victory in Phoenix on March 16th, his first in the Bud Light Cup Series, began in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round when he scored 91 points on Canyon State Livestock’s bull, Prime Time.

"Every time I ride, I expect to win," says Melton, who worked his way up through the ranks of the PBR’s Challenger Tour. In fact, this is his sixth professional competition with the PBR. "The first three events, I made it to the short-go, but got bucked off the last three." Not bad for the young 20-year-old who just celebrated his birthday two days ago. "I always try to give 100 percent all of the time. I know eventually it will pay off."

Chad Brennan of Alliance, Nebraska, placed second, winning $14,590.40. 1996 World Champion, Owen Washburn of Lordsburg, New Mexico, and Justin McBride of Elk City, Okla., tied for third place.

Other notes from the Phoenix Bud Light Cup Series:

* Lee Akin of Weatherford, Oklahoma, set the pace for the first round with a solid 90-point ride on Canyon State Livestock’s bull, Black Hawk.

* Two-time world champion Jim Sharp, of Stephenville, Texas, continued his hot streak by bringing in an 88.5 ride on Silicone in the First Round.

* The "Ford Truck Moment of Truth" $5,000 prize went unclaimed since Lee Akin was unable to hold his lead heading into the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. It will increase to $10,000 at the next stop in Albuquerque.
